Stereo going Bad, Need your Opinion on what to do

I have a 2000 GAGT with the Premium stereo/Cass which has the 8 speakers and amp in the trunk. Which sounds good except my volume control is getting very touchy. I would like to get a Aftermarket Reciever/CD player. If I get a new Stereo will it still sound as good?
I would like your opinions.

i think it will.my buddy has the same car and he went and got a kenwood cd player and it sounds good :)
