I just bought a pair of speakers from canadian tire tonight, didnt have them for 30 minutes and someone stole them out of the back seat of the car. I had gone to pick up my girlfriend from work and the car was locked when I went in, wasnt gone more then 25 mins from the car and when we got to the car, the passenger side door was open and the other 3 doors were still locked and the speakers were long gone. No damge whatsoever to the car, its almost as if someone had a key and opened the door grabbed the speakers and took off, the speakers were even covered by a bag in the back seat and it was dark and raining so someone would have had to purposly look in the car to see the mound in the backseat and move the bag to see what the box was. After alot of cursing and wishing I had an alarm on the car and wishing I didnt live in the city, i realized there wasnt much I could do except contact my insurance and see if they'll cover it and file a police report and my gf is going to talk to her work and see what they say, but now we are afraid to leave anything in the car at all because it might not be there when we get back into the car. But one question we had was Do grand am keys work in other grand ams? and what is the best brand of alarm you can buy?

that sucks man. you sure all the door locks work? I would try them see if they all lock and unlock.
there is no 2 GA's that will have the same key cut. Unless someone takes your Vin off the window and gets one cut.
I only go with the best alarm. (VIPER) top of the line viper alarms are alot of money though.

Viper all the way. I had a Viper 5002 installed a couple of months a go. Best $500 I've ever spent. It was worth it since my car says "break in to me" on it, not literally of course.

actually this is not 100% true.
for several years it is known that GM keys will work in several other GM cars. ive seen it discussed on here before.
sorry to hear about your loss. I would be extremely pissed if that happened to me. Ill bet it was either another "customer" from from canadian tire, or an employee.

See thats the thing, I bought the speakers at 8:17 pm last night, parked at my gfs work at 8:30 came back out just before 9 and they were gone. And yes all 4 doors were locked, living in the city you get in the habit of making sure your car is always locked up and the battery is dead on my keyless entry remote, so I have to use the key to get into the car and the automatic locks only unlock the drivers side door, so when I parked it, it only unlocked my drivers door which I then locked before walking away from the car. I do know other types of cars share keys, i remember my grandfather telling a story about a car he had like 30 years ago, he parked at a store or something, came back out of the store got in a car and left and he was on the road and started noticing all this stuff that wasnt in his car before, so he turned around and went back and there was the owner trying to find his car and there was gramps car sitting in the lot, it was the exact same model of car and he got in, used his key, started the car up and took off without realizing. Even though that was 30 years ago I know some Ford Explorers share keys too today, i just didnt know about the Grand Am's. I just got back from filing a police report so hopefully insurance covers it. Where did you get the viper alarms?

How much were the speakers? Insurance deductibles would make it kinda pointless since the speakers a likely to be cheaper than deductible. Plus, they weren't part of the car... therefore it is considered a "personal item." That's usually a home owners/renters insurance claim (if you have that coverage) instead of car insurance.

You're wrong. There are only so many key patterns available. While it's uncommon, the are duplicate keys out there. We took advantage of that fact one year when Mel locked the keys to her 2001 Grand Am in her trunk. With 50 sets of Grand Am keys on hand we were able to get into her car.
However, as for the theft, it's much more likely that one of the doors wasn't locked. With power locks there is a slim chance that one of the lock solenoids didn't function and left the door unlocked even though you hit the lock button. I'd test the power locks several times to see if there isn't a problem there.
For the future, items of value go in the trunk. I had to learn that one the hard way too. :(

That is correct. For my break-in, I had to deal with 2 insurance companies (and 2 deductibles!). My car insurance covered the damage to the car and the stereo that was stolen, but I had to go through my home insurance to replace the stolen cameras.

the doors were locked, the car automatically locks when you put it into drive and when you stop and park and turn the key off the only one that unlocks is the drivers door, and i know they were locked and I checked the locks this morning. I do have renters insurance and its with the same guy as my auto insurance so i'll find out on monday. I just got back from future shop with an alarm and its getting installed on Monday

Maybe should of put them in the trunk, even in the city with an alarm someone can break ur window, steal ur stuff out of ur car and be gone before u even get outside. I mean an alarm helps but also helps to keep stuff in your car hidden.

Damn man, that sucks to hear. What area of the city were you in when they got stolen, out of curiosity? Which alarm did you end up going with, I've been looking at getting one for a while.

At the Western Fair parking lot, I'll likely be getting a Viper 310HV, but itll be a couple weeks before that happens.

ya i've been thinking about it and with all the upgrades I want to do to the car, i want it be somewhat secured so I think ill be spending the extra $$ and go with the Viper 5002 model.

In most cases you can look at DEI products and find ones with similar specs to the Viper counterpart. AFAIK they're going to be somewhat close in quality.

Exactly my point, since it is all owned by one company the products should be fairly close in quality as long as you don't buy their bottom line product.
