I've got a friend who has a system that makes a loud 'popping' noise when he turns off the HU. Any ideas as to why, aside from checking the basic connections and grounds?
keywords for future searches: pop, popping, turnoff, shutdown, amp noise, amp popping noise, pop on shutoff

I don't think you can "fix" it.
When power is removed, electro-magnetic fields collapse on the transformers. The collapsing fields generate a signal to the speakers.

Interesting. It's just that not all systems do it, or maybe it's just so small it's not noticeable. Do you think the amount of power going to the sub is positively correlated with the loudness of the pop on shutdown?

from my experience in systems...that popping is the remote wire turning the amps on and off

My amp has never done that nor have the amps that my friends have, so I'm not so sure about the remote wire being the culprit. Did the noise just start, does it only happen in certain weather conditions, after it's hot, etc. Is it still warrantied? Like you said, check your power, ground, and even your RCAs to make sure they're in securely.

It's not mine, it's a friend's system, I had nothing to do with the install/planning etc, so I'm just trying to figure out why it's popping.
HIGHLY doubtful on the warranty.
Happens all the time regardless of weather.

try this use a relay off your ignition using the remote wire as the activator or the other way is just use a toggle switch for the amp turn it on b4 the head unit and off after thus the "ground loss pop" will not be amplified

it sounds like he has either a cheap amp or a messed up amp.
a relay might work, but doubtful.

I had the popping issue when I put in my first set of subs. Does he have a factory amp? My issue was that the factory Monsoon amp and the aftermarket amp were turning off at different times.

i had that problem in ym old car, but after moving the headunit, amp, and sub to my new one with a new/better wiring job, the noise stopped. I would check the connections on both ends of the power and ground wires, make sure that the proper gauge power wire is used for the amplifier, and make sure the audio cables and power cable are on separate sides of the car to reduce any interference. After re-wiring the system, the noise was gone for me.
Not a bad way to spend a nice spring afternoon either ;)
