what's a good h/u so that I will get nice sound without distortion? Just give me a couple of brands. I got a sony x-plod cd player and it sounds good, but I get distortion with it at higher volumes and it gets annoying even with my new speakers.

Are your speakers amplified? If not, then amplify them. If they are, then check the x-over points on the amp.

I was talking about the speakers off the head unit. If I have them off my Rockford amp GAWD they sound sweet! I've been thinking about getting rid of the subs and running the interior speakers off the head unit so that my car will be faster, but off the sony h/u they sound good at low volumes, but I can't exactly drive down the highway with the windows open and the music blasting if you know what I mean. I hear Alpine makes good head units, but they are expensive and I want something where the buttons light up red so it goes better with my dash lights. How is JVC for head units?

I love my pioneer deck, but its about time I get some money to finish my subs/amp install and get some aftermarket speakers :D

Alpine makes a very nice clean sound, especially on their high end stuff. Even their low end stuff has a higher s/n ratio than most aftermarket cd players. I've had Kenwood in all my rides. Through all the torture and stress I've put them through I've only had one h/u that gave me problems. The way I heard it from my stereo shop was that after about 6 months the units faceplate started acting up. I sent that one to Kenwood last year and bought their new top of the line one and it hasn't given me a bit of trouble.

I've had my sony in for almost a year and it has the flip down/removeable face plates and I have never had any problems with it except for the distortion at higher volumes when I'm trying to listen to cd's, but that's when I have the speakers hooked up to the headunit insted of an amp. I have my amp mounted off the back of my sub box, but I don't have that in cause I'm trying to find out where the short is with my gauges and it's one less thing for me to worry about. I like how much faster my car without the subs, but I still want a stereo that sounds nice and I don't want to tear up my trunk finding a new place to put the amp.

I've heard about speaker caps, what do those do? would they cut off some of the distortion or are they just a waste of money?

i don't guess i've ever heard of a speaker cap. i've heard of crossovers and bass-blockers. both of which work pretty good. crossovers better than bass-blockers

my faceplate was motorized. just something else to go wrong. evidently kenwood thought so too because almost all of their new stuff is manual

I've got a Kenwood, two buttons on either side light up red, the source button and the button that changes the equilizer setting
