Well I'm not very savvy when it comes to car audio, and while I've searched and searched for days I can't find a clear cut yes-or-no answer to my problem.

I'd like to connect my iPod to my 2002 Grand Am GT stock radio through an AUX input. (I want to absolutely avoid FM transmitters.) I believe I have the Monsoon system (as you can see in the picture I've attatched.)

The thing is, I don't want a new deck, I don't want to use a cassette adapter. I want to just plug my iPod into the AUX input and be able to play music. I'm fine with controlling everything from the iPod itself so that is not a concern.

I've found this adapter, is this exactly what I'm looking for? I'd like to do this as cheap as possible, so $50 isn't too bad vs buying a whole new deck and installing it.

Won't work. You don't have a factory installed accessory (CD changer, satellite radio) and it won't work on double din radios it says, which is what you have.

Mine works on my Double-Din Radio... though it goes through XM Radio...

Doesn't look like he has satellite radio, so it won't work (read my post, the site says it won't work without satellite radio or a cd changer).

Ok,
So I take it that it's not possible to connect my iPod via AUX to the deck I currently have?

I was just looking at new decks online, such as the Pioneer DEH-P4000UB, but it looks like that deck will only take up about half the space my current one does. I don't want a big hole right under my CD player... what decks would you recommend?

Thanks for the help,
Mike

Unless you find a 2-DIN HU (large CD player or a DVD player) the mounting plate will give you a hole under the deck (it's only about 1.5"), but you can store a stereo remote, CDs, iPod, or other stuff under there.

Wrote this in my FS thread

There are three common ways to connect and iPod to a car stereo. The first method is called an "FM Modulator" which is the easiest (and often the least expensive) way to hook an iPod up.

But the sound quality is the worst!

The reason it sounds so distant and faint usually has to do with interference from local FM radio station.

The second way to connect your iPod is with an after market adapter. So, for between $50-$100 you can buy a small device that can be installed with the existing car stereo that will provide an Auxiliary input. Then you can plug it right into the headphone jack. This doesn't give you a way to charge your iPod, so you'll have to take that into consideration but the sound quality is much better then FM!

However, it is not as good at the third option:

A new radio for about $150 can give you complete iPod integration. I use an Pioneer head unit, and its great. One cable charges my iPod, and gives me full control and digital sound quality all though one interface. Obviously this is the most invasive and expensive way to connect an iPod

I hope that gives you some ideas.

Referring to option #2, which adapter would get the job done?

You may want to look into one of these:

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=50900&i=469GM12AX2&tp=422

If you're still unsure if they'll work, give a call to Crutchfield and ask them about your situation. They'll walk you through the best option (they're customer service is awesome) and if you get the product home and it doesn't work, they have a great return policy.

Dude you have a cassette player. An adapter for that costs like $10 and they work great. Had one with my old Contour... they have great sound quality and everything.. why go through all this hassle when you can just get one of those?

ok well I think I'm going to go with the Alpine iDA-X100 to connect my iPod.

Is there anything made to cover up the hole under the deck? Like an extra piece of dashboard that matches the car?

I've tried a couple of those cassette things, an iHome one and a dynex one from best buy, and my player spits both out, anyone have a fix for this?

Yeah I had that problem too. I tried two of those adapters and it spits it out and says "broken tape".
