I've got a 97 Grand Am GT (3100, front disc rear drum). I use this as a daily driver, it's in no way a race car or track car, I was wondering if any of you have
found a good set of pads and rotors (regular or crossdrilled/slotted) that works well for a daily family car. I've got a 4 yr old son and a daughter coming VERY soon, the front brakes are worn (bought the car used) so I'm just looking to get some better than stock braking power w/out going with 13" wildwood 4piston crossdrilled/slotted rotors or something haha. Usually I go with the cheapest Advance auto/auto zone pads and some stock rotors. but now I have other lives to take into consideration...so i guess i need something safer now. lol

Any suggestions...looking to stay at about $150. Don't need a race ready setup..because the wife is getting this car soon.

Oh and before you guys chime in with

"ONLY RACE CARS NEED CROSSDRILLED/SLOTTED ROTORS"

or " no street car needs that much stopping power"

Realize this...I live in FLORIDA. Retirement capital of the world..
And old person sees you coming straight down the road at 65...he WILL wait
until you are 200 feet from him and pull out right infront of you and accelerate
from 0-60 in about 1 hour. Ever heard of the "WHIP" ...doing 75 on the highway...a driver on the cell reailzes "OH ****, that's my exit!" and "whips"
across 3-4 lanes of traffic not paying attention to who's near them...usually resulting in a nice 3+ car pile up. lol. So i don't have a race car, but is race-worthy stopping power a bad thing to have when you are driving around in 100 degree weather, bright and sunny (even whilst it's raining) surrounded by old people. haha. So no I'm NOT driving a race car or a weekend track warrior, a t70 turbo or anything, but my 2 kids aren't gonna get a $40 brake setup and stop on hope. lol. not trying to be an ass, but i know the no street car needs brakes that good. Does a grand am REALLY need 4wheel disc and traction control? No, but we use it anyways haha.

Not sure what is available as far as cheap upgrades for your car, but better rotors (more importantly pads) are a good place to start. Try tirerack.com and se what's available for you.

For a little more money and time you could probably look into doing a rear-disc conversion. Not sure what all that would entail for ya though.

Definately look into doing a disc conversion for the rear. It's not too hard if you got the right tools, and of course, know what you're doing. I'd say go with a brembo brand rotor and a ceramic pad.
