I was thinking about converting my filter into cone. I was wondering who out there has done this, and if they could tell me how they did it.

you mean, replacing your stock filter w/ a cone filter.

I wouldnt go w/ that. It sux in hot air when you are at idle and that isnt good. if you want to change your intake (or upgrade) a CAI is better. WAI are not very helpful (better than stock? yes in most cases, but definately not as good as CAI).

If you take out the stock airbox to put CAI in, will ram air still suck in air?

UMM...Nope! The stock "ram air" is just a gimmick anyway.

yeah, although I heard there are some ways to open up the stock ram-air...but mostly it is just a marketing gimick (I think NASA tested it, and at 100mph it is only like 1psi of boost or something?)

On the contrary, it does help. I noticed a small, but noticeable increase when switching to a WAI from a K&N replacement filter. Granted, it won't help much (this can have a negative effect) if you're doing lots of stop & go driving on really hot days, but most of the time it's better than just a stock air box. Building your own heat shield helps a little, but of course a true CAI would be the best route.

WAI are better than stock but not as good as CAI. :)

how hard is it to make a custom CAI? i cant imagine it'd be much more than a steel pipe from the Intake manifold to the wheel well. i'm probably wrong, but it doesnt seem to difficult.

it isnt hard. All you need is to find the easiest way to get to a nice cold area for the filter to sit at. In some cars, there is a lot of room everywhere. As for the 99+ V6 grand ams, there isnt much room. But the main reason why people dont build their own intakes, is because they dont have the tools.
My friend built his own CAI from 2 Civic CAI tubes. I will take pics and do a how to so that everyone can make their own.

why does everyone use civic tubes? couldnt you just go down to home depot and buy some steel tubing and some heat resistant ceramic coating?

I went with a mandrel bend exhaust pipe from Summit. Have it your way...

Here's a pic of my latest CAI that I built last nite for a friend. Just 2 pieces, one in the engine compartment and one in the fender well. My first one is in my pics at the link at the bottom. It's a 3 piece that I did about 4 months ago.

Why the hell would NASA test a Grand Am's RAM AIR? Don't tell me it's because they wanna put it on the Shuttle!
