View Full Version : Strut Replacement Questions...

So, I've determined that it is probably about time I replace the struts in my car, I can tell that I need replacements in the future...

However, I've planned on lowering my car soon as well. At this point, I can really only afford to do one or the other, and my question is, what should I do first?

Do I get the springs, and maybe just keep them until I get the struts, is it safe to get the struts, put them on and then go get different springs? I'm probably going to be eying the Eibach Springs since I'd rather not have a huge drop living up in Vermont...

And also, what struts should I look into? I've been looking at KYB, but they seem a bit expensive and I'm curious if there's something a bit less expensive that's not a big brand name...

Thanks in advance guys!

KYB is what you should get and if you shop around you can find then for a good price I think I got them for around 50 a piece in the front and about 30 in the back but not sure anymore research an old strut thead i posted last year. If your struts arn't dead I suggest waiting till you can afford to do both at the same time so your not doing double the work

I just searched under your name and came up empty when I searched for strut threads... Think you can dig it up? I'm not too familiar with this site now that it's changed a bit...

x2... wait until you can afford to do both at once. I made the mistake of doing them separately... and felt the pain of having to take everything apart again later.

Thanks Ralph, appreciate it. I'm going to get a quote for the exhaust system I'm looking at doing hopefully this weekend and see if I can find a way to borrow enough money to both since there's a fairly good car show coming up in July that I want to attend...

I had thought for the eibach drop you would need the AGX KYB struts, is this not so?

the price difference between the GR-2 and the AGX is quite a lot and really I couldnt afford to buy 500bux in struts plus the springs and mounts etc.

If I could use the GR-2 then I think its possible, whats the real diff between the AGX and the GR-2 besides them being adjustable, I thought u needed to set the AGX to the stiffest if you dropped it on eibach's

will the car handle real nice and last for a long time with the GR-2, I want performance but i also want it to last a while

thanks

Wow yea the strut doesn't really matter on what springs you can use. You can use a stock spring if you really want.

what i meant was i would like to get the ebiach springs and drop it but thought i needed the agx kyb struts to go alongside

so the gr-2's would be fine to use with the eibach's?

would the struts last a good length, i thought i had heard someone using the stock struts with the eibach and the struts wore out real fast

They will be fine I always suggest a better strut for the better ride but either one will work. I suggest GR-2's being the best bang for your buck very few members have the AGXs

One of the dangers of dropping the car and using the old struts is the the shaft of the strut will sink into the strut body further. You might ask "So?". If the strut shaft has any corrosion, nicks, etc. it will cut through the seals and you will have leakage.

It's best to do both at the same time.

yea I had no plans to drop it on the eibach springs unless I would replace all the struts at the same time.

stock springs though wouldnt need to be replaced if struts were replaced though would they? I mean if someone didnt want to drop it, springs should last a long time shouldnt they?

thanks for clearing that up though John, I thought a lot of members had the AGX, always thought everyone who dropped spent a lot of cash lol. still not cheap but saving 250-300bux on the struts is a lot.

my mounts are starting to go, creaking a lot, so im planning to do new suspension and would like to drop (just hope its not too much of one, roads in this town arnt that good), so im pricing and planning out for eibachs, gr-2's (now) and new mounts

my confusion i think was that i thought the gr-2's were basically stock replacements and that you needed the AGX for the drop, thought stock struts wouldnt be able to drop, but now i understand, thanks tenspeed

approx whats a good life length of the suspension with that setup, gr-2 and eibach, how many km/yr etc?

thanks a lot guys

GR-2s are a little better then stock. The monroe struts are basically stock. Go to the website in the thread I supplied above its where I bought my struts and strut mounts. You will need to search my KYB part #s though since they arn't good with the vehical search.

I picked up KYB AGX Struts (all mounting hardware) and the Eibach Pro Kit just @ $1,000. If you go for the KYB G2, drop your cost significantly. I saved up, used that gov stimulous check and CHA CHING, suspension!
