I have a 99 Grand Am SE 3.4L and I'm researching putting a new transmission in it. I think the electronics on the Grand Am were changed drastically in 2001? I'm wondering if I could put (for example) a 4T45E from a 2003 Alero into the car and have it work? Also I know the GT transmission is geared a little different.
What do you guys recommend?

Also I know the GT transmission is geared a little different.I don't think the Alero came with a 4T45E , i believe all had the 4T40E . Only the Grand Am GT and optional on SE had 4T45E . The final drive ratio is different on the GT and will not work with the computer on the SE or Alero ...... ;)

I am pretty sure if you got an alero with a V6 it came with a 4T45E, correct me if I'm wrong. Mainly I'm concerned about the electronics between the years..aka if a newer transmission will work in a 99.

gt00 is right. There was no alero equivalent to the GAGT and all automatic aleros got the 4t40e. As for the change, I know that when I had to replace the tranny in my 04 I was told that the tranny from my 99 alero would not work.

My spider gear went in my tranny. I have no idea why, as it shouldn't have gone that early and i don't drive the car very hard, but the dealer wouldn't replace it
even under my aftermarket warranty. It wasn't a whine though. It was a clunk clunk for a while. Then it started to slip like a mf and losing tranny fluid real fast.
