I know you guys have all probably heard and answered this question so many times that you want to throw something at me, but anyways...

I was wondering what muffler would be best for my 2000 GA SE 2.4L
I was looking at flowmaster's 40 and 80 series. What would you guys recommend? (or just send me a link)

I want a muscle kind of sound and am trying to avoid too much rice.

Thanks

i dont think youll get away from the rice sound since you have a 4 cylinder, but good luck.

hmm, it's fine, I just don't want it to be TOO ricey
(if that makes sense)

would you recommend anything?

I had a flowmaster 40 on my HHR with a 2.2 in it. it sounded good. you could still tell it had a 4 banger in it, but it was very nice.

get the 80 series flowmaster it fits across the car that way it will fit right back there and you can go dual outs and it sounds pretty good with the 2.4 its the 80s series that goes to firebirds and the trans am i talked to my muffler guy about it last week but my speeding ticket kinda took that money so ill have to wait lil longer

Apparently chambered mufflers don't sound that great on the 2.4 , that includes flow master , The dynomax super turbo ( and clones ) are supposed to sound good however .... ;)

I have magnaflow sounds good, low deep tone on a 3100. Not rice sounding at all. I dont know how it will sound on a 4cyl. though.

hard to tell in vids, but tell me what you guys think. I like the dynomax super turbos, but again its just a video...

my slp on my 2.2 has a nice low sound to it at low rpms, but gets a little ricey above 3K.

How about this,

Dynomax Super Turbo 2.25" I/O
Hooker Exhaust tips 2.5" I 3" O

how much do you think it would cost to install?

Aren't the hooker tips just chrome, no stainless steel? Grab the generic stainless tips off PFYC if you want cheap tips, they look amazing.

GA_mayne

those are $50.00 and the hookers are only $37.00 for pretty much the same exact thing, unless there is something i don't know about....

Got a link? The last hooker tips I saw were chrome plated instead of stainless steel, the finish burns off and they'll rust, there was a pic where the tips actually fell off during a bumper install.

ha well that sucks. Here's (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HOK%2D21433HKR&N=700+306048+115&autoview=sku) the link

yeah i don't think they are stainless...and i don't want rust...so I'll probably go with the the others.

Yeah, I'd rather pay $26 more and not have to replace it in 2 years. My shop teacher and a buddy both have chrome tips on their trucks and the finish is flaking off.

yeah, makes sense.
I guess it is worth it in the long run.

Thanks!

No problem. Are you going to Y the pipe so that you have tips on each side? Maybe Peyman has a picture of his Y'd off Flowmaster 80 for reference for placement, not many 5th gen members Y it off, we normally use a crossflow muffler, but I didn't see any crossflow 2 1/4 inlet mufflers.

nah, I was just going to do the single outlet with the dual tip, kind of like the stock. It would be nice to have duals, but I don't know...
is the stock piping for a 2000 GA SE1 2 1/4"? I think I read somewhere that it was 2 1/8"

What size would you recommend for the muffler and the tips. Right now I was looking at a 2 1/4" I/O and a 2 1/2" tip. Would that be fine?

sorry for all the questions guys, kinda new to this.

Blackhawk

SE is 2 1/8", GT is 2 1/4".

That size would work fine, and would require just a little expanding of the pipe to fit it on the muffler. The tip would go on perfectly.

alright cool, I'll hopefully get to a muffler shop sometime this week and see what they'll charge and get this all set up.
Thanks again.

I was charged an hour to weld up a full catback, though I had the timesaving overaxle pipe. So if you're just putting it on the pipe after the axle it'll be really fast and cheap.

all that I am planning on doing is cutting the old muffler out and putting the new one in. (with some custom pipe work to make it fit correctly)
The only thing I don't have is the piping. so just a cut, bend, weld, bend, weld, done. If I had a welder I could probably do it myself.

Blackhawk

And a tube bender. The most you'd be charged for it all is the price for the pipe (gonna use like a foot) and an hour of labor if they decide to be greedy and round up. It'll take them maybe a half hour tops if you have them remove your old muffler.

awesome. Hopefully I will have this done within the following week!!! Thanks Blackhawk with all of my newbie questions.

No problem, we've all been there. I was asking exhaust questions a few months ago before I got my catback installed, I'm a cautious buyer and I like doing things right the first time. Sadly my exhaust installer wasn't, but I'll just get it flanged with the right size pipe when the cat craps out.

One more quick question....(sigh)

is there any specific muffler designed for a 4 cyl? I want to dynomax super turbo, but is there a specific one I have to get for my 2.4L 4 popper?

RickHigginsHtbr

no, whatever fits.

would having a dual outlets be a problem on my 2.4?

RickHigginsHtbr

no, a good shop can make it work. You will also need a muffler like this.
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/600/642/642-12266.jpg

The exhaust come on on the top right pipe and exits out the bottom two pipes.
