I just bought an 01 Grand Am for my stepdaughter. I test drove the car and I was able to talk down the dealer to get it for $1900 They wanted $3100. Is a 3.4V6 with 102,000 miles on it. The body is pretty straight and never been wrecked, all works except....
1) The Transmission Shifts slightly hard.
2) Engine Check Soon light is on on the Tach side (I think its has 2 Engine Check Soon lights?) I worked on a 2000 4Cly GA and it had 2, all but I fixed it.
3) Seems like the passenger side wheel bearing is going bad. Sounds when the car is moving and slows down when is coasting down.
4) A/C Compressor does not engage, possible low on refrigerant.
5) Apparently Dexcool has been mixed with regular coolant, needs a cooling system flushed.
Beside all that, is a pretty solid car. The engine is clean no oil comes out of the valve covers, runs smooth and strong and the oil dipstick is not stained and fill cap is not gunk up from build up deposits. I had a 94 Grand Prix with 168,000 on it before I trade it with my ex wife, still had the original exhaust and was one of the best cars I ever own. All still in working order. I bought an 03 Impala with the same engine as the 01 GA, so I am pretty familiarized with these cars. I am hoping the get the kinks ironed on this car, that is why I am here. I bought it today, so I will pick up the car Monday... Will see !
