View Full Version : My GA is getting sluggish...

And it's really bothering me, but I don't know if it could be the catalytic converter, worn ignition, or even bad oil. Under acceleration, the car just feels like it's being held back. Any suggestions?

same for me man, how many miles you have on yours, like its boggy, push the gas, rpm's rev, car just doesnt move like it used to, doesnt have that jump that it should, I drive my mom's cavy some times and that 2.2l pulls more at times

im thinking its my cat, its one of the only things i havent changed yet, dont have an ses light however (have changed both front and rear o2 sensors about 15k km ago)

im planning on doing my exhaust but not sure when, few months atleast, let me know if you figure it out, would kinda be nice if it is the cat, will it get real sluggish without throwing a code i wonder...

I have a bad feeling it is. I'm around 82k with the car. I don't have a MIL light either. Although something got my attention when I revved the motor while in park a week ago, the sound of something like a lose heat shield. It's never done it since, but it still bugs me.

o man, same here, somethings rattling back there I sware, sometimes I can hear it from my tailpipes like a little piece of metal is rattling around in there

also at idle it kinda sounds like somethigns rattling in my engine bay too, only does it in D really, not sure whats that about, also at idle it sounds like the engines starving for air, cant really think of the word to make the sound, its like it gets some air, then doesnt get as much, then gets some air, and on and on, pulsating sound over and over

Yikes, mine doesn't do that. But have you noticed when the car is cold, and you start it up, you hear a slight squeak from the side of the motor where the belts are? I don't know if it's my idler pulley or the belt. I can tell it's on it's second belt already, and I know the pulley has the be orginal.

jackpot

I think that might be a separate issue (maybe related to your slug but dont think so), sometimes you'll hear a little squeak when its cold even if its a new belt, i have a new belt and had the tension arm pulley changed, it was quite rough wouldnt spin good at all, i thought my idler pully was wobbly too but it was just the paint on it

you might hear a squeak if one of your pulleys bearings is starting to go

also there are two different size belts for our GA's, I learned that the hard way after some @#$%^ idiot gave me the wrong belt for my year at canadian tire, I reemed him a new one when i found out and had to change it again (from separate years in the 99+ i guess when they moved the alt location)

as for my strange idle sound it can only be heard if no one else is around (like cars) put it in D when its totally warm, hold the foot on the brake and listen carefully, have been told im crazy by some, others can hear it and think its strange, mechanic said he couldnt find anything wrong with it and that it sounded fine to him...argh lol, i can feel a vibration in the steering wheel accompanied by the sound, womm womm as it pulsates, each time the steering wheel shaking for a second then stopping for a few, over and over

my buddy has a 2003 monte carlo and it was doing that for the longest time it sounds like it is surging but the rpms never change

does yours do it worse when your ac is on?

I rarely use my AC, and when I do, I'm light on the gas pedal.

yea the RPM's dont move at all, sounds like its surging for sure, sometimes also if i rev it to about 1000 rpm in park and let go the throttle it will drop down to 500 or so bounce back to 1000 then settle

not sure if its worse with the a/c, however i know i have a leak in the a/c somewhere, its low, need to get that fixed (use the warranty for something)

did your buddy figure out the issue?

I can't yell at the car for losing power. At night the car will become depressed and cut itself.

not yet we changed the cat and both o2 sensors yesterday and re charged his ac and it seemed better but it still did it :( so next i think he wants to try changing the coils plugs and wires so we will see if that helps

jackpot
06-30-2008, 01:07 PM
had the plugs and wires changed, not the coil however, it sounds more like a restriction than an ignition problem, could be completely wrong tho

could be completely separate issues to the sluggishness tho, hopefully both our issues with that are solved with a cat, let me know if it does man if you change it

then you tell that bish that she should go ahead and cut herself, you should even leave razors for her so she doesn't have to steal your good ones

Mine makes that same sound...only it's not sluggish. one of my mechanic friends thinks the cat might be going out on it. it's a very annoying sound, especially in public.:(

The sluggishness, I noticed this when I bought my car and it turned out it had an engine coolant leak inside the engine. Should have that checked and get your engine flushed checking for leaks.

There was a rattle on my old car, where something was rubbing against the emergency break. When I turned on the AC though the sound went away, figure something was loose or its just the design of the car.

its crazy how new our cars are, chaos has an 03, you and I stewartfn have an 04, im just over the 100k mile mark, it would be quite crazy if all of our cats are going lol, besides that and clean the EGR passage way there isnt much else I can think of (no idea if the EGR valve would have that great of an effect either)

A friend of mine is going to try and help me out. He has two cans of Seafoam, one we'll throw in the gas tank and the other will go into the motor. Hopfully this will help out.

iv decided to abandon that idea for now, let us know how the seafoam goes tho

iv had a similar product put through my intake mani, had it cleaned right out, have put several cans of high quality fuel system cleaner in my tank over the coarse of a while, havent noticed a lick of difference

but still, hopefully it helps out your slug

about to start calling these the GM slug lol

haha i have a 99 with less than 92k on it and i really dont have that sluggish problem. i just push the pedal harder and away i go

and change your damn oil! you prolly have a lot of buildup in there making it go to the shitter. or have your tranny flushed

oil changed less than 1500 miles ago and the trans pan was dropped about 15000 miles ago so check those both off the list.

same, oil changed about 1000km ago and has been changed every 5-6k km with synthetic since iv owned it

Found out the problem, clogged cat. My exhaust has no more back pressure. Normally, if I accelerate hard, let go of the gas above 4000 rpms, you hear the back pressure rushing out of the exhaust, now it doesn't do it anymore, and that rattling? That was the catylist knocking around in the cat.

At an idle mine sounds like a baffle rattling in the exhaust, no thte cat has done it for 120,000 and the cats fine. no codes. when it rots out im gonna cut it open and find that bugger. lol

08-01-2008, 04:03 PM
after i backed into something, i had my exhaust redone with a new cat. the rattling sound went awy, but my car still hesitates. that leads me to beleive that i have a vacuum leak somewhere or my trans is shot. Oh well, i dont care anymore. If the trans goes, it goes. that will be reason enough for me to do a 6 speed swap.

I "HAD" the same problem, I cut the Cat/Con out and replaced it with straight section of pipe. Problem solved. You might want to check laws on emmissions before doing this. My state don't have a pollution law. the right thing to do is replace the it:p

You might want to check laws on emmissions before doing this. My state don't have a pollution law.ALL states have laws regarding vehicle emissions, it is a condition of federal highway tax funding that they do.
Above all, it is federal law that no emissions system can be defeated or altered by anybody.

Now whether your state or county has any inspections, or you'll ever get caught, is a completely different situation.

the right thing to do is replace it.Correct.
