For our 3400 engines, can there be "too" much coolent?

I just replaced my coolent reservoir tank because the old one leaked and I wonder why. I noticed that our tank has a overflow hole at the top, but when you put the cap on, that is blocked. So if you put too much coolent and put the cap on, will it damage the tank?

the tank requires a certain amt of presure, 15psi IIRC, too much coolant may cause too much presure and could blow the seal on the cap causing the overflow hole to be used.

its not a good idea thats for sure, best to fill the resevior to the full cold line when the engine has been off for many hours (ie a cold engine)

glad you figured out where that coolant was going, did you get a new cap with the new tank?

I just got a new tank this time. I got a new cap last year because it got threaded wrong.

Yeah, when my old pressure cap was fubar and there was a touch too much coolant, it just flowed out everytime I shut the car off. Correct amount of coolant and a new reservoir cap fixed it immediately. :)

Where did it flow out from? The cap or the actual overflow hose?
