View Full Version : hood needs new paint job

I bought my car from my brother and the only thing wrong with the paint was what's on the hood. There was a small patch (now much bigger a year later) where it looked like the paint had faded towards the top of the hood.
I decided to buy a car bra and figured if it gets any worse with this on it's not really going to matter since it needs a paint job anyways. So I've left the bra on there because it's got big circles where the paint rubbed off and looks awful. There's also some patches on the fenders now.
I'm hoping by the end of this summer my brother will be able to paint it for me since he has the spray gun to do it. After that's done I won't be putting that bra back on. Don't want to take a chance of that happening so bad again. I actually think it looks better off. I don't recommend getting one of those. I don't know if it does that to all cars, or if it's just this kind of paint that oxidizes like that.
I don't have any pictures of the car with the circles, but here is one with the bra on.

Lol, bras may prevent rock chips, but they tear the shit out of your paint. :P
My hood has rock chips BTW.. and they've been touched up, but with darker paint. If i wanted it repainted.. $460. Ouch!

do you think the clearcoat would be rubbed off?
Just apply ALOT of wax on that. You don't want the rubbing to get so bad as to exposing metal... then you'll worry about rusting.
I'm surprised a bra would do that.

The bra by itself is fine, but they end up trapping dirt and dust under them. Couple that with the movement you get from wind, etc, and eventually they'll chaff right through the paint.

I don't think it matters what kind of bra you'd have on a car, it would still find a way to move and rub the paint off with all the dirt and crap that gets under them. I would take the top half off whenever I would wash the car trying to avoid that happening, but it did anyway.
So yeah I have a few pink circles underneath the top half of it and then a big streak coming off towards the top of the hood. The whole hood itself is hazed over too. Wax doesn't seem to help much anymore. It's not half as shiney as the rest of the car.
I want to start sanding it soon for paint cuz yeah eventually it's going to be bare metal and we don't want that. :shake:
I'll have to take before and after pictures I guess.

damn, sounds like oxidation. You'll definately need a repaint and new clearcoat.

Well id have to say im keeping my car bra on until i can get my front bumber repainted.. its been macco'd and its chipping off like crazy. The trick ive found though is to clean under the bra very well with a pressure washer. I havent had any problems yet just make sure you get the water into every space you can

Well I decided today to take the car bra off. After I waxed it like crazy it didn't seem so bad. But it's still going to need paint cuz there's alot of chips in it and those circles aren't just gonna disappear.
Anyways I cleaned the bra up and I'll probably try to sell it on eBay or something. Don't really want it anymore.

If anyone is interested...here are a couple pics of the car's bad spots.

I do have a new primered hood for it now, but it's going to sit in the garage for awhile until it gets painted and such. When that happens I'll have more pics of it.
