ok heres the problem. a couple weeks ago, my quad died. the people in the shop found chunks of metal in the oil pan. thats not the problem tho. so they replace the engine and i picked it up and started drivin it home. it was drivin wonderfully. better than when i originally bought it. but on the way home the check engine light came on. but a minute later it turned off. and it has been doin this since i got it back. on and off. but yesterday my friends all wanted to go out to grand haven and all their cars are pieces, soi drove. but before i left i wanted to go to autozone and get a diagnostics check to find out why the check engine light is on. i go there and they tell me (and show) that the diagnostics port on my car is the older standard so they cant check it. but one of their other stores has a key they can use. so i drive to 2 other autozones across town and finally find the one that has it. the whole time i'm driving its mostly doing fine, except sometimes when i would hit the gas it wouldnt pick up hardly at all but after a couple seconds it would just suddenly go and i'd be crusin. so anyway, when i got to autozone, they used the key and nothing happened. they guy asked if i had done anything to the engine that would have caused the light to come on and i said well, the engine was replaced a few days ago and he told me to reset the computer. so i did when i got home. then i started drivin to the beach (bout half hour on the highway) and the light never turned on until i was pulling back into my driveway later that night. it was driving fine too. now the light is coming on and off every once in a while. and when i put it in reverse theres a grinding sound. like something is, well, grinding. but only when i have it in reverse and i hold the brake or hit the gas. any ideas what is wrong with my car? i'm already called the shop and they said to bring it in and they'll look at it, but i wanna know what it is in case i can just do it myself.

Grinding would be your tranny as it has nothing to do with the engine as it was not replaced with the engine. I have heard of tranny's going out after a new or rebuilt motor has been swaped in. Makes sense too, your driving on a tranny that is use to your old worn motor, you put a new or rebuilt motor that puts out more power it can hurt your tranny. How are you driving the car? If that engine is rebuilt or even used I wouldn't shift past 3K until you break it in a bit. Break in on a new vehicle is a lot different from a rebuilt or swapped in motor. A new vehicle should be driven the way you plan to drive the car. A rebuilt motor needs to be broken in easy(shifing about 3K on a quad) because all your seals and gaskets need to settle in. If you start over reving and racing you can blow a gasket faster than you would think.

its not new or rebuilt. its the exact same kind of engine i had in there before. a 2.3 Quad 4 SOHC. i dont know where they found this engine, but from what i think it was in an older GA. and for a while too. there was a big ass carbon build up. nothin but black smoke came outta the exhaust for like, the first 100 miles i had it. i'm gonna be takin it back to the shop tomorrow so they can fix whatever they screwed up.it drives like a champ tho. in drive it accelerates quick, shifts smooth, and just drives beautifully. except in reverse. and that check engine light is really pissin me off.
