I am new to this site, and I think that I posted this question a couple of times in the wrong forums before I found this one...
I have a 1995 Grand Am GT (3100 V6) that I want to increase the HP on. I have no idea where to start...could anyone offer some friendly advice?

ok plug wires? no that doesnt give hp
neither does lowering your car
i am pretty sure the roller rockers are the same as the 96+
please show me a site where they sell a 160 deg thermostat for our cars
other than that you're on the right track

To increase your HP and Torque on your car try these with out taking the engine out and aren't that expensive.
Pulley Kit
Exhaust
Cold Air Intake
Chip
Bigger Throttle Body
Another little known trick and can make your car pretty quick, and put more torque on the ground is use a little smaller tire. If run with a tire that is say 25" tall, move to one that is 20" tall. It puts more torque on the ground and can get you moving quicker, but it will lower your top speed, but you get from 0-60 a second or two quicker.
These are the easiest places to start.....
More difficult ones without taking the engine out are:
MSD ignition
Nitros Oxide
Turbo or supercharger (Keep boost low if not rebuilding engine)
Bigger fuel injectors
Headers
ECU
Higher pressure fuel pump.
Serious upgrades, but require the engine to be removed
Higher compression pistons (if no turbo or supercharger installed)
Lower compression pistons (installing turbos or supercharger)
Better cam (A little racier. May require new ECU)
Better springs (Needed for better cam.)
Better rings (ie Sealed Power Gapless rings.)
Longer connecting rods (Must change pin height on piston)
Port and polish on heads and intakes and exhaust.
Lowering your car won't make it faster or quicker. Neither will changing tires other than the diameter of the tire. If you have a lot of tire spin you may need a stickier tire. Better Plug wires are pretty much nominal. They can give a little more boost in HP, but none that you would notice. Porting and polishing is great, but only really effective in the upper rpm ranges (2500 rpm and up) when more air movement is required. However it can improve the responsiveness of your engine, especailly when you put on a bigger TB.
I hope this helps and if you ever want to build an engine bring 30K and lets have at it....:)

95 and earlier used stamped rockers. 96 and up use roller rockers.

For the money though....rollers are nice and look great...but you might get 1 or 2 hp out of them if you stick with the standard ratio....but if you increase the ratio then you can get some serious lift and not have to remove the engine.....lol but there is a problem......if it isn't timed right, then you chance putting a valve into a piston.....lol

If you do that then your going to have to put a cam in with a higher lift. False 98+ used roller rockers I had a chance to get a 98 3100 but the motor was to new and i didnt have the money to change somethings i think my 97 3100 runs better then the 98 3100 anyways for some odd reason :???:

96 and up 3100's used roller rockers. If you want to use them on a 95 or older 3.1 you will have to use 96 and up heads, cam, lifters, and pushrods.
Here are a couple of references to read:

wait, so does that mean mantaparts, Sports Roller Tip Rocker Arms won't work on my car, even tho it says for the 3100?

1995grandam,
The rockers shown at Mantapart are roller tipped rockers, these are the stamped type rocker with a roller on the end that pushes the valve down. These are superior to the stock stamped rocker.
They should work with your engine, but you will have to verify that with the folks at Mantapart.
The roller rockers used on the 96 and up 3100, and 3400's are have a roller bearing in the middle of the rocker where it pivots up and down to open the valve. This why they are called roller rockers and not roller tipped rockers.
Another significant difference between the 2 is how they mount to the head. The stamped rocker mounts to a stud screwed into the head. The roller rocker mounts to the head using a bolt and a spacer. The spacer sits between the bottom of the rocker and bolt hole on the head. The boss on the head has a slot cut into it and the spacer fits into this slot when it is installed.
Here is a pic of a 1994 3.1 with the stamped rockers installed. I am trying to find a picture of the 3100 with the roller rocker.
Please read the next several posts and look at the pics.

Here is a close up picture of the 3.1/3100 head for 95 and older. This head is designed to use the stamped rockers (This is the head the Matapart kit is meant for)

Here is a picture of the head on the 96 and new engines for the 3100/3400 roller rocker (not roller tipped rockers)

Well, I haven't been able to find a picture of the 96 and up roller rocker for the 3100/3400. As soon as I do, I will post it so your can see the difference.
