My Alero's original warranty is about to expire the end of this month. The dealership is trying to sell me the extended warranty. It's a full bumper to bumper zero deductable for 36 months for $1500 CDN. You think I should do it? So far the only major problem is the leaking intake manifold which was fixed under the warranty. What are the chances of $1500 worth of repairs are needed in the next 3 years?

Yeah, most extended warrantys sold around here have a $500 deductible or they are powertrain only.

What is the mileage limit? How much driving do you do and how many miles are on your car now bud? I had the same conversation with my wife last October when considering an extended warranty on my '99 :)
Bumper to bumper? Really? Ask them to show you where it says they will repair your glove box door if it falls off, or if the paint begins to de-laminate (peel), etc. These are bumper to bumper items to me. Don't buy it only to find out that it doesn't cover what they say. Have them show you in print. And ask what the exclusions are. There will be some, regardless of bumper to bumper or not.
Make sure the warranty is transferable if you sell the car. Make sure the company issuing the warranty has a track record and check it out. The one time I bought an extended warranty the warranty company went down the tubes on me, leaving me with nothing, but an empty wallet.
I'm of the personal opinion that extended warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on. But that's me and that's from my experiences some time ago. Things could be different now.
But $1500 is a lot of money, so do your research.

I would get the exendend warrrenty..
I have had my 2003 for less than a year and have 21,000miles on it..so I will have to get it..I just hoping it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.

I've had prety good experience with Extended Warranty. My previous car was a 4-year-old Merc Topaz and I got a 2 year/40k km extended warranty for $1200. Within 3 months my tranny blew ($3500) and some time after my A/C compressor ($750).
Well worth it for me :)
On the GA I also bought an extended 5 years/140k km. My take on it is as long as I'm paying for the damn thing I don't want to have to dish out for expensive repairs.

The extended warranty is provided by GM, so it's pretty safe bet. The car can be repaired at any GM dealership with genuine GM parts. It covers every moving mechanical and electrical part.
Not including cosmetic damage such as bodywork and paint, or regular maintainance parts like brake pads and struts, exhaust.
It's called the GM Total PLus Protection Plan. should be on the website. I think I will take it.

I bought my extended warranty is thru N.E.W.S. and has paid for itself twice over, I paid 1,200 Dollars U.S. and the rack and pinion assembly, Lower Intake Manifold Gasket, an oil seal somewhere, AND the Transmission have been replaced on the extended warranty At no expense to me I dont even have a deductible. In my opinion they are well worth it.

Well, I think $1500 for 3 years is a bit pricey, but that's me. If it gives you peace of mind then go for it. At least you know GM isn't going to go belly up on you and leave you hanging.
But they are not selling a bumper to bumper warranty. It is drivetrain and electricals/electronics. Good thing it covers electricals/electronics.

That's the one I looked at and although it isn't all that bad, I decided for the amount of miles I put on my car it wasn't worth the money ... good luck bud :)

I'm actually against all extended warranties, but that's just me, YMMV.:D

Well, it's been a long time since the last post but I decided to dig up this thread for an update. I did indead purchase the GMPP for $1500/3 years zero deductable. It actually is bumper-to-bumper as I had the glovebox handle and lightswitch replaced.
But the big thing is I had a squeak in the steering column. Had to replace airbag coil and ribbon, upper steering column and bearings. Total cost about $2200.
Sure glad I bought that extended warranty now. Still have 30 months left!

I think I'll look into getting that for my car when the warrany is up, considering I've already had several expensive repairs done, and my factory warranty isn't anywhere near expired.

I'm looking at buying an extended warranty for my new Buick here in about 3 months. Cost is $1200 for 60 months (after factory warranty expires) or 100K mi total on the vehicle. Bumper to bumper $50 deductible at a GM dealership... but no deductible if the work is performed at the dealership I purchase the warranty through.
Can't remember the company name, although the coverage is nearly identical to the last extended warranty I bought for my 98GA. I paid $1300 for that and it was the same deductible but for 72months or 100K mi. That warranty covered everything but cosmetic damage (with the exception of cosmetic damaged caused by for example the paint peeling off the car due to a bad factory paint job).
The warranty on the GA more than paid for itself. The warranty company shelled out over $3000 in repairs for things like:
*control arm bushings
*strut mounts
*fuel injector
*faulty wiring module in dash
*alternator
*broken drivers seat - cushion collapsed on left had side
*paid for rental car for a week and for towing while the dealership was waiting on parts for the wiring module
When I traded the car off, the warranty was prorated and I received over $800 back from the warranty company for the time/mileage still left on the extended warranty.
The dealership I go through (and that I bought the Buick through) does their research on the extended warranties to make sure that A) customers don't get screwed when purchasing one and B) it really does cover most items one would consider part of bumper to bumper so that their's not a hassle when it comes time to have to actually do repairs on the car.
That dealership knows the importance of customer loyalty and how to build it properly. Hell they give me a loaner car no charge anytime my car goes in for work with them. They keep 4 old high high mileage early 90s Olds and Buicks out back that are soley for loaning out to customers when their car is in for repairs.
That particular dealership even went to bat for me with another dealership and the warranty company when their were some questions/problems with the wiring repair that had to be done at a different dealership because the car broke down 120 miles away from their dealership (where I would have preferred the work was done). Essentially they told the warranty company that if the issue wasn't resolved to my satisfaction they would no longer be selling their extended warranties through their dealership.
They know they've created a loyal customer with me and because of that I've referred many people I know to them when looking for a vehicle. I've always told those I've referred "Hey you'll get a good fair deal on whatever you're looking for. Its not going to be a "steal" of a deal but it will be a fair price. Nor are you going to get stuck with some pile of shit that breaks down 1 month after purchasing it." Those that I've referred to them that have bought cars through them have been extremely pleased with what they've purchased and the excellent customer service they've received.
