well, the 3.4 se and gt are about the same speed. the gt has a bit more power and stiffer suspention. i thing the 3.4 is a better engine then the 2.4. they are reliable, but do have some commmon problems. the most expensive is the intake gasket. it usually happends under warenty and on happends once. a nother is bad brakes, nothing a up grade cant fix. they can last a long time, i think theres a few people on here with 150-200 miles on them.

How long any car will last depends on many things. Proper maintenance, how it's driven, and what parts you're willing to replace. The newer Grand Ams have a good service history, with a few common problems, not unlike any other car on the road.

With the V6, the lower intake manifold gaskets are prone to early failure. There is now a re-designed gasket available to address this issue.

Front brake rotors are known to warp. Again, this can be solved easily with a quality set of aftermarket rotors and pads and proper maintenance of the calipers (cleaning and lubricating caliper slides, etc).

Other than that it's standard fare. It's a car, it's going to have issues. Just take care of problems as they arise and you'll be fine.

I had a 99 Grand Am GT for a year and never ever had one bit of problem with it ever. It was a wonderful car, until I got into a wreck and screwed me over with repairs so then I traded it in on a new 03 grand am se1.. yes a SE.. sure its got some cons and pros about going from what I had to an SE.. I love my SE and I don't regret ever trading in my GT for it. I also have a 5spd and its fun to drive, plus my SE is fully loaded as to my GT wasn't. My GT had 59,000 miles on it and it still ran like it was brand new.. I ran the car hard sometimes and have a few times my new one, but nothing stupid like street racing or anything like that.. Just go and test drive and have it looked over my a tech or something..

I can ge tthe brakes fixed, but is there anything i can do to stop the gasket from breaking?? i was reading some other forums and it sounds like a very annoying and expensive problem.

3.1 L? I know where you can get an extra gasket, from my car, out there on the side of the highway. Freakin shut right down on the highway. Week ago dealer told me battery was shot, so i replaced, turns out he was wrong:(
