I'm looking to replace the valve cover gaskets on my '95 Quad 4. Aside from the obvious concerns (cleaning off old gaskets, torque when bolting back on,..) does anyone know of any 'gotchas' I should be aware of? Just looking at the engine, it doesn't appear like the job would be too difficult.

If you are gonna do your water pump, you'll almost be there:

I've found that it's not a simple job. To get the rocker arm/valve covers off, you'll have to remove the timing gear cover and possibly the chain and sprokets to get to 2 bolts to complete. I called a couple of shops around here for estimates and it averages $500 give/take. If anyone knows anything different, post it!

...and I thought GM's were easy to work on. Oh my :-( I was hoping to be able to replace the cam cover gasket on her GA. Wow, it is amazing how some companies can build an engine that is that difficult to work on. Amazing!!! Why douldnt they have made the engine like everyone else?

I perused a Chilton's book on the car and it does describe the procedure, but my estimation is that it would be a 6-8 hour job.

I just found a reputable shop here that will do the job for around $250. See if you can find a similar price and judge whether 6-8 hours of your time is worth that!
