Quick thought.

Has anyone thought about running an IRC server for gaoc? I think it will be easier for most people to use. I'm stuck with keeping a firefox browser open but sometimes I navigate away not thinking about it. Its just a quick thought but I can have a server setup for it if need be. I have a cpl friends who run IRCD's for a bunch of stuff and are willing to give me a free server and such. it would be like irc.gaownersclub.com.. thanks.

How would making the site a chat room help? We already have a chat option added to the site, and a few people use it. IIRC we used to have an IRC chat, but it was never used and was abandoned.

What's wrong with keeping a Firefox browser window open? Don't you open other tabs and search around on different sites?

Seriously though IRC was great but it will be way over most people's heads on how to use it, the built in chat works great

It was just a thought, I just hate keeping a window open to chat esp when i click a link and it changes my chat window to the link. I didn't say change the sit to a chat room. I simply implied making another sub domain that would link irc to a certain IP address from the IRCD server. A lot of people still use IRC. I've used irc since i've been 13 for my torrents.. and IRC isn't that hard to use, they have auto connects, type in the server and port one time and everytime you open it it will auto connect to the server, but hey it was just an idea

we have had an IRC room set up on at least 4 or 5 occasions. It never really works out for to long. Besides we have an internal chat room already set up here on the site.

IRC has too much of a learning curve, and while we've had it in the past, it didn't see much use by anyone outside of the more technically-inclined. Additionally, it requires both a client and unblocked access - something not possible for many people who visit GAOC from work or other semi-restricted networks.

We'd prefer it is easy enough for everyone to use. The current web client seems to be the best balance between simply ease-of-use and features.
